| Description | Routine clinical laboratory test results often are nonspecific in animals with cardiovascular (CV) disease. However, sometimes abnormalities reveal evidence of low cardiac output or systemic venous congestion, such as azotemia and mild elevations in liver enzymes, or concurrent noncardiac disease that might influence CV function. Other abnormalities might occur as well, including in patients receiving medical therapy for congestive heart failure (CHF). Multisystemic disease is especially common in older cardiac patients, so general metabolic screening is particularly advisable in this population. Cardiac biomarkers, including troponin and natriuretic peptides, can be useful when screening for cardiac disease or injury. Their utility for guiding therapy and estimating prognosis continues to be explored. In the future, additional biomarkers might be used clinically to help manage animals with CV disease and CHF. Other tests that could be important for individual cases include those for parasitic infection, endocrine abnormalities, and blood taurine concentration, as well as blood cultures and monitoring of therapeutic drug concentrations. Some aspects of the clinical laboratory examination relevant to the CV system are mentioned below and summarized in Table 19.1. However, an exhaustive review of all laboratory abnormalities is beyond the scope of this text. Book Name: Cardiovascular Disease in Companion Animals |
