| Description | Heart murmurs are heard often during cardiac auscultation of horses. Cardiac murmurs caused by mitral regurgitation (MR), aortic regurgitation (AR), and tricuspid regurgitation (TR) are common in horses. Many organic murmurs in the horse seem to be associated with minimal, if any, impact on work performance. The descriptor “functional” in this setting does not indicate physiological, but a functional consequence of disease affecting the valve support apparatus. Poorly characterized thickening of valves with evidence for inflammation, but without histologic features of infective endocarditis or evidence of an active valve infection. Pulmonary regurgitation might develop from pulmonary hypertension or dilation of the pulmonary valve annulus. Valvar stenosis is rare in horses. When it occurs, it typically involves either pulmonary or tricuspid valve malformations or complete atresia of the inflow or outflow tract. Limited studies of renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) hormones and natriuretic peptides have been reported. Book Name: Cardiovascular Disease in Companion Animals |
