| Description | Reef stabilizing pillars are commonly used as regional support on deep level South African gold mines where longwall mining layouts are adopted. A mine layout which utilizes concrete pillars in place of the reef pillars has been considered from a rock mechanics, a cost and an implementation point of view. Energy Release Rates and Average Pillar Stresses were used to assess the effectiveness of the mining and support layouts. The paper concludes that a mining scheme using concrete pillars is feasible but recognizes that changes to the mining system will be necessary. Book Name: Innovations in Mining Backfill Technology |
