| Description | A cross section of the B-North ore body of the Cannon Mine was instrumented by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to monitor backfill and rock deformation during excavation. A two-dimensional, finite-element model was used to analyze the benching cut-and-fill mining method. The instruments indicated that both the backfill pillars and rock abutments took load during secondary mining. The rate of loading in the backfill increased after one of the last secondary pillars was extracted. A high correlation existed between relative displacements in the rock and relative displacements predicted by a two-dimensional, finite-element model, but there was no linear correlation between predicted relative displacements in the cemented fill and measured displacements in the fill.
