| Description | Sill Pillars are structural elements upon which the safety and economics of overhead cut-and-fill mining in moderate width steeply dipping ore zones depend. Traditional sill design appears to have developed from experience and timber sill mats are generally used to ensure sill stability. Centrifuge model studies are combined with equilibrium analysis in this paper to provide insight into sill pillar behaviour. This research indicates that stable sill pillars can be designed with confidence and that the general use of timber mats may be an unnecessary expense.
