| Description | This paper examines the potential for teacher welfare services to improve teacher productivity in Nigeria. Teachers have been regarded as the engine of transformation of a country, nurturing learners to become useful to society. The academic performance of students has been declining to the extent that parents blame secondary schools for a lack of qualified teachers. The government, which is the policymaker, contributes immensely to the low productivity of teachers in the classroom. Hence, this paper attempts to introduce the repackaging of teacher welfare services to improve the productivity of teachers in the school system. This repackaging will be a signal by the government of Nigeria in an area vital to assisting teachers in increasing their productivity. Based on this discourse, it is recommended that teachers' salaries need to increase in line with employees in other sectors, and encouraging the development of teachers through attendance at conferences and workshops was also suggested. |
