| Description | Biological contamination of surfaces or biofouling is a severe concern in medical, industrial, and marine fields, leading to health-related, economic, and environmental issues. The major strategies for anti-biofouling of surfaces are preventing the foulants from attaching to the surfaces or degrading them. The earlier strategies of biocidal paints and coatings have been replaced by non-biocidal or greener alternatives, aided by recent advances in materials and biomimicking of natural anti-biofouling mechanisms. Various anti-biofouling systems utilizing supramolecular chemistry, a branch of chemistry that draws inspiration from nature, have been discussed in this chapter. The supramolecular polymers/gels/self-assemblies prevent biofouling on the surface using different non-covalent interactions and chemical modification. Advances in the design strategy of supramolecular antifoulants would result in effective solutions for combating biofouling.
