| Description | Supramolecular self-assembly is a spontaneous process and a powerful one-step synthetic method for the facile construction of targeted structures and materials. The basic principle of supramolecular self-assembly relies on the information encoded within the complementary building units that self-recognize each other through various non-covalent interactions. Among different self-assembly processes, metal-ligand coordination-driven self-assembly has a special interest because of the high bond enthalpy and predictable directionality of the coordination bond. The directional coordination self-assembly has evolved to be the most attractive field of research in modern sciences, and this strategy has successfully been adopted for the construction of a vast library of finite supramolecular architectures. In this chapter, we provide a detailed discussion on the rational design, synthesis, and a few selected applications of coordination-driven self-assembled supramolecular architectures of various topologies and functional properties. This chapter is presented as a representative of supramolecular self-assemblies whose scope and applications vary with the material of interest and highlights interdisciplinary opportunities of the molecular self-assembly approach spanning the fields of chemistry, biology, and material sciences.
