| Description | How do we get good mental health services in Australia? At the heart of any discussion of the purpose and implementation of policy and planning is a commitment to improving outcomes for mental health consumers, their families and carers. Understanding the policy and legal contexts for service provision is central to social work practice in mental health. In this chapter, we describe developments in mental health policy and law in Australia and suggest ways in which social workers can work to get good outcomes for the people and communities they support. Advocates for mental health reform, including the Australian Association of Social Workers, work to ensure the best policy, the right resources, accessible services, evidence-informed treatments and the best-trained workforce so that people with mental illness can get the support they need to lead better lives. Despite significant policy development and improvements in the resources available to treat and support people with mental illness, many consumers, families and carers do not believe they have good outcomes.
