| Description | Social work practice in the mental health area operates within a changing context of concepts and values. This represents a theoretical basis for practice that shapes the way policy and services are developed. In this chapter, we identify and define some of these concepts and show how they shape social work practice. The concepts are relevant to social work in all settings but are most important in practice in multidisciplinary settings where social workers have to manage the competing practice paradigms of other disciplines. As we argued in Chapter 1, we want social workers to be clear and confident about what they do and to be able to articulate the theoretical basis for their work. We want social workers to be able to connect their practice to a knowledge and value base. Each of the concepts discussed in this chapter provides theoretical direction for practice and a language to describe the work. The concepts provide consistent themes for the articulation of social work practice that are described in later chapters. Book Name: Social Work Practice in Mental Health |
