| Description | Social work with the families of people who have a mental illness has emerged as a major area of practice, yet a focus on families has always been a feature of social work practice (AASW, 2008b, 2014). Social workers have been pioneers in the area of family therapy, and the vast majority of work in the child and adolescent mental health field has been family focused. These have been specialised areas of practice, each with its own theory base and often requiring additional specialist training and supervision. While we will draw on knowledge from both areas, in this chapter we will focus primarily on family work as a broad area of practice in generic mental health settings. We are most interested in the impact of mental illness on individuals within a family context, and as such we recognise the importance of families as providing the primary supportive relationships in which illness is experienced, treatment is provided and recovery is pursued.
