Abstract	Après la profonde récession de 2001, l’économie a connu une croissance proche de 8 pour cent en 2002, le taux d’inflation en fin d’année tombant à un peu moins de 30 pour cent, nettement en retrait sur l’objectif de 35 pour cent. Une croissance plus lente est prévue pour 2003, principalement en raison de la réticence persistante des banques locales à accorder des prêts, de la hausse des taux d’intérêt réels, et de la guerre en Irak. L’inflation devrait s’accélérer au premier semestre de 2003 en raison de la récente dépréciation de la monnaie, des effets retardés d’un prix du pétrole élevé et des hausses saisonnières des produits agricoles, avant de se rapprocher de l’objectif de 20 pour cent d’ici la fin de l’année, mais probablement sans l’atteindre. La mise en place d’un gouvernement de parti unique disposant d’une confortable majorité après les élections générales de novembre 2002 a été au départ saluée par les marchés financiers. Néanmoins, un grave dérapage budgétaire a suscité des inquiétudes. Le respect des objectifs de dépenses et la mise en œuvre régulière des réformes structurelles dans le secteur bancaire et ailleurs sont essentiels pour poursuivre la décrue de l’inflation et créer les conditions d’une reprise durable.
