Abstract	The Tore Supra data acquisition system was designed in the early 1980s and has considerably evolved since then. Three generations of data acquisition units still coexist. Cost and maintenance of these different operating systems become expensive. So, it was decided to explore an alternative solution based on an open source operating system with a diskless system. Linux distributions for VME bus and PCI bus systems have been evaluated and compared to Lynx OS real time operating system. The results obtained allowed to choose a version of Linux for data acquisition system on Tore Supra.
