Abstract | Summary form only given as follows. Solid-state switches, based on thyristor technology, have been shown to be a viable alternative to thermionic device technology. In particular optimised GTO thyristor type devices have proved to be particularly suited to some high peak current applications. The press-pack housing used in this type of technology, also lends well to the series connection of the individual switches to achieve the required system blocking voltage. This paper describes the design and electrical performance of a single semiconductor switch assembly deploying 13 modular sub-switches in series. The complete switch is configured to allow a single optical trigger signal for the whole unit. The paper includes additional detail of how this achieved via a pulse current loop coupled to a series of current transformers local to the optimised GTO thyristors. The sub-switches include individual static and dynamic sharing components, along with transient voltage suppression. The complete switch assembly will block 30 kV in either polarity and has a peak forward current rating of in excess of 20 kA, depending on pulse width-rate of rise of current is limited only by package inductance. The use of additional modules in series would facilitate the option of higher voltage operation if required by any particular application. Full recorded test data for the integrated switch is included in the paper, along with detail of the design philosophy. This specific device was developed for driving a discharge tube at 30 pulses per second. Operating conditions were 25 kV at 4.5 kA 20 /spl mu/s half-sine wave. Operating life was required to be in excess of 90 million shots-without maintenance. |
