| Abstract | What shall we do with the user survey? What shall we do with the user survey? What shall we do with the user survey?Early in the morning?Thoughts of an upcoming annual user survey should produce neither shudders nor (worse yet) yawns from your computer center staff. Granted, most service organizations toss responsibility for the user survey around like a hot potato because the potential to “get burned” is real. But there are strategies for increasing the likelihood that you'll not just survive the survey experience in an academic computing environment, but actually benefit from it.Whether done poorly or proficiently, the user survey is a monumental task. It's just common sense, therefore, that if having a greater understanding of your services won't make a difference in how you deliver those services or if you don't have any burning questions about services that need answering, then you shouldn't bother with a user survey. You'll be doing both the campus and yourself a favor.I've put together a list of simple rules for computer user surveys that will hopefully, as the title claims, chart a course that leads to a survey that will produce changes in the way you deliver services. In an attempt to adhere to the nautical theme of the conference, I've couched these user survey rules in terms of safety rules for boating and canoeing that I found in my Girl Scout Handbook (copyright 1955). If that sounds particularly boring to you, consider that most writers couch guidelines for user surveys in the language of statistical inference and hypothesis testing, so anything is an improvement to my way of thinking.Actually, it really took very little imagination on my part to translate the simple Girl Scout boating rules into guidelines for computer center user surveys. For instance, the gem “Stay ashore in bad weather” translate very nicely into this user survey guideline:“Never administer your user survey immediately after a thunderstorm that resulted in a two week power failure in which all systems were down and a massive loss of user files occurred.”. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

NDLI is a conglomeration of freely available or institutionally contributed or donated or publisher managed contents. Almost all these contents are hosted and accessed from respective sources. The responsibility for authenticity, relevance, completeness, accuracy, reliability and suitability of these contents rests with the respective organization and NDLI has no responsibility or liability for these. Every effort is made to keep the NDLI portal up and running smoothly unless there are some unavoidable technical issues.
Ministry of Education, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT), has sponsored and funded the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) project.
