Abstract | The aim of this project is to build a system that aggregates data across social networks, and to investigate the privacy risks of sharing phone numbers on online social media via public posts or pro les, when used in conjunction with mobile instant messaging systems like WhatsApp, Viber, WeChat etc. In this project, the social networks across which data has been aggregated, are Google+, Facebook and Twitter, and instant messaging system whose privacy risks have been studied is WhatsApp. We nd that while users usually share their own phone numbers for publicity, marketing and business-related purposes, sometimes phone numbers are also shared by others, which causes a privacy breach for the owner of the phone number. This information can be used to trace the owner's online social media pro le for additional attributes. Using heuristics such as similar user names and locations, it is possible to link accounts of users across social networks. Moreover, for phone numbers that had corresponding accounts on WhatsApp, we could detect patterns of when they are active or inactive by monitoring them over a period of 16 hours. |
