Description | Three-panel comic strip shows Ol' Houn' Dog preparing to make a political speech which will reveal how "Man's best friend views the issues." Attending the rally are Albert Alligator, Churchy La Femme (the turtle), a large cat, and the Three Bats. At the last minute the Mouse shows up with the speech, saying, "I had trouble spellin' Noble Canine." The cartoon spoofs campaign speeches purportedly showing the candidate's personal views. This strip was one of a number in which Pogo was a reluctant candidate for president. The Pogo for President campaign began in 1952 as a promotional move, offering "I Go Pogo" buttons based on Eisenhower's "I Like Ike" slogan, but it quickly took on a life of its own, and Pogo's candidacy was revived every four years until 1972. |
