Description | In 1953, when Senator Joseph McCarthy's investigation of communists in government was at its height, Kelly was one of the few editorial voices to speak out against his tactics. He introduced Simple J. Malarkey (a vicious wildcat resembling McCarthy) and the half-blind Mole MacCarony, who had been invited by the pious Deacon Mushrat to help clean up dangerous elements in the swamp. Malarkey quickly took over, ousting the Deacon and instituting his own cleanup program. In this four-panel comic strip, Albert Alligator and the Mouse are looking for MacCarony and Malarkey who, they suspect, have kidnapped the Pup Dog and Ol' Hound. When they ask the fierce-looking cowbirds if they have seen them, the cowbirds react with a tirade of abuse, but change their tune when they receive a letter "from the top." Kelly ridicules extremists of any kind who spout the party line. |
