Description | This Rajasthani style painting depicts the splendour of Rama seated on the golden throne with Sita under the shade of a huge tree, the Saptparni, the name it is known by, for its leaves being in clusters of seven. The golden throne is decorated with a big red bolster and an umbrella or kshatra which have tassels of pearls hanging from it. The legs of the throne are highly ornamental with seated lion motifs giving it its name, the simhasana -lion-seat. Hanuman, the ardent devotee of Rama is holding his feet in his hands. Rama's two younger brothers, Bharata and Shatrughana are standing in front of him with folded hands while the third, Lakshmana, is standing behind holding a flywhisk. It is said that the artist Baijnath worked with his father Chokha, a noted artist at Deogarh seat, known as thikana, in Mewar, considered as the strong hold of the Rawats. Baijnath worked under the patronage of Rawat Nahar Singh I (1821- 1847) and his successor Rawat Gokuldas. He not only painted on paper but also on the walls of the Moti Mahal palace at Deogarh. The fine delineation of nature in this painting of Rama Durbar shows a high level of maturity that Baijnath had attained in his style. His later works were influenced by the art styles of Nathadwara and Jaipur. Deogarh artists have used their own natural surroundings in their paintings as the Kotah artists did before them. The use of bright colours and fine craftsmanship are the noteworthy features of this painting. |
