Description | The painting depicts a scene from Ramayana. Ravana was worried on getting the information through his spies about the mobilization of a huge monkey army under Rama's command laying seize of his capital Lanka. He called his younger brother Kumbhakaran for making strategy of war against Rama and also asked for his help. Known to sleep for six months at one stretch he was awakened on Ravana's call with great difficulty. Despite his monstrous size, great hunger, unnatural sleep and other similar things including torturing and killing many sages texts describe him to be kind and wise, and hence Ravana prefers consulting. When Kumbhakaran was informed of the circumstances of Ravana's decision to fight with Rama, he tried to convince Ravana that whatever he is doing and has done is wrong. He counselled Ravana to return Sita to avert the war but unlike Vibhishana, he did not abandon Ravana when his advice was rejected. However, he chose to fight in the battle due to his loyalty to his big brother. This Kangra painting shows Kumbhakaran and Ravana on the terrace of the palace. The blue sky is seen in the background and green fields are nearby. Ravana is sitting on a golden throne and Kumbhakaran is shown seated in front of him. He is wearing a red costume with blue uttariya and a golden crown. Two horns are emerging on his head which indicates that he belongs to a demon clan. Behind him, four demons are standing to support him and carry out his orders. The artist has presented Kumbhakaran with a normal appearance in contrast to his monstrous image with which he is generally depicted. This is perhaps the artist's indication of the positiveness of his character which reflects in his fair advice he gave to Ravana. |
