Description | On the death of his many trusted close associates, Ravana was furious and shaking with anger rushed towards the battlefield. On his way, he killed innumerable soldiers of Rama's army. Seeing that Rama also attacked Ravana and a dreadful fight with bows and arrows started between Rama and Ravana. The arrows discharged by them covered the entire sky darkness enshrouded the entire space from the earth to the sky. One warrior shot arrows and the other destroyed them and it the same vice versa. Lakshmana also joined and with his arrows cut the flag of Ravana's chariot into many pieces. The head of Ravana's charioteer was also severed. Lakshmana with five sharp arrows also broke into pieces Ravana's huge bow. His horses were too killed by Lakshmana's arrows. Ravana then got down from his chariot and discharged a terrible Shakti towards Lakshmana. The Shakti pierced the heart of Lakshmana and he fell down on the ground unconscious. An angry Rama cried and shot at Ravana a fatal arrow which wounded him deadly disabling him from lifting his bow and shoot an arrow. At this moment, Ravana's charioteer took him out of the battlefield. Soon after he regained consciousness and scolded the charioteer for leaving the battlefield. On his orders, the charioteer turned the chariot and brought him back to the battlefield. This Malwa artist has successfully rendered the fierce scene of the battle against a blue background blended with green. As portrays in the folio, a terrific battle is going on between Ravana and Hanuman. Ravana as usual has been painted with ten heads and twenty besides a donkey's head emerging over his ten human heads. Rama is at the extreme right wearing a red costume and aiming his arrow towards Ravana. Ravana's chariot, which was damaged by Lakshmana, is shown driven by two brown horses. The demons are also shown shooting the arrows. Lakshmana was wounded by Ravana's arrows. Sugriva is comforting Lakshmana as he is seen having Lakshmana head on his lap. Vibhishana is standing behind in a very dejected mood. The sky has turned into the field of arrows. The painting has an inscription. |
