Abstract	An unprecedented organic–inorganic hybrid germanoniobate compound $Na_{4}[Cu(en)_{2}(H_{2}O)_{2}]_{5}[Na_{6}Ge_{8}Nb_{32}O_{108}H_{8}(OH)_{4}]·41H_{2}O$ (1) was synthesized under the hydrothermal condition. In compound 1, the $\{Nb_{16}\}$ cage containing four $\{GeO_{4}\}$ tetrahedra in its internal cavity results in a heteropolyniobate anion $[H_{4}Ge_{4}Nb_{16}O_{54}(OH)_{2}]^{10−}$ $(\{Ge_{4}Nb_{16}\}),$ which is connected by a $\{Na_{6}\}$ cluster into the first germanoniobate-based sandwich-type structure. Further, the sandwich germanoniobates are connected by $[Na_{2}Cu(en)_{2}O_{6}H_{8}]$ groups into a porous network with one dimensional channels along the a-axis. Photocatalytic study reveals that compound 1 exhibits good photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue .
