| Abstract | 1. The effects of the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, lisinopril, were studied in guinea-pig atria and papillary muscles and in single isolated ventricular cells. 2. In isolated right atria, lisinopril (0.001-10 microM) decreased the amplitude and rate of the spontaneous contractions. In electrically driven left atria this negative inotropic effect was accompanied by a shortening of the time to peak tension and time for total contraction. 3. Lisinopril did not modify the electrophysiological characteristics of the ventricular action potentials recorded in papillary muscles perfused with normal Tyrode solution or elicited by isoprenaline in papillary muscles perfused with 27 mM K Tyrode solution. 4. In single ventricular cells, lisinopril (10 microM) had no effect on the inward L-type Ca2+ (ICa,L), the inward rectifier (IK1) or the delayed rectifier K+ currents (IK). However, it abolished the stimulation-dependent facilitation of the L-type Ca2+ current. 6. These results indicate that the negative inotropic effect of lisinopril cannot be explained by a decrease in Ca2+ entry through L-type channels and suggest that lisinopril may possibly act at an intracellular site to reduce contractile force. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
