Abstract Supramolecular capsules are a subject of intense research during the last four decades because of their potential utilizations in various fields. They have been utilized as nano vessel and targeted drug delivery in recent years. Cyclotricatechylene takes a bowl shape in its crown structure with six hydrogen bond donors. Cyclotricatechylene easily forms molecular capsule with phenanthroline. In this work, we utilize this capsule to encapsulate phenanthrene. Also, we report the supramolecular assembly of 9,10-phenanthraquinone, which did not give a capsular assembly. These supramolecular entities were studied in solid state by X-ray diffraction.
