Child Abuse in Africa: Nigeria as focus

Content Provider Springer Nature Link
Author Ebigbo, P. O.
Copyright Year 2003
Abstract Ebigbo through the example of Nigeria illustrates the sheer magnitude of the problem of child abuse and neglect in Africa. The traditional farming and trading Nigerian society, impacted by economic and political misery, cultural conflict, unemployment, illiteracy, and urban drift, is leading to exploited, uneducated, abused, malnourished children. Economic misery hits the children and women the hardest, producing broken marriages and homes. Children from such homes are subject to trafficking, abuse and neglect. Women are the worst off. They are subjected to early marriages, wife beating, rape in the home, female genital mutilation and inhuman widowhood. To remedy the situation, Ebigbo points out to the pressing need for collaboration among African nations, the crucial role of education and the need for governmental and non-governmental organizations to unite for effective synergized action.
