| Abstract | Over a two year-period, the composition and structure of epibenthic bivalve clusters on a backbarrier tidal flat of the East Frisian Wadden Sea was studied. The bivalve clusters developed from an intense and approximately simultaneous spatfall of the two most conspicuous bivalve species,Mytilus edulis andCerastoderma edule. Spatfall occurred between two severe winters characterized by massive drift-ice coverage over several weeks. Extended shell-layers, usually representing favorable secondary hardgrounds for initial settlement ofM. edulis were not colonized, whereas a thin layer of juvenileM. edulis andC. edule was found on the adjacent sandy tidal flat. During the second growth season the thin layer developed into epibenthic bivalve clusters of different size, composed predominantly of living specimens ofC. edule. Normally,C. edule has an endobenthic life-mode, living burrowed just a few cm below the sediment surface. In contrast to previous studies, the great bulk of epibenthic specimens of C.edule did survive within the clusters.C. edule dominates in these clusters except in the most central parts of the tidal flat where more or less monospecificMytilus-beds occur. The growth rates (in length) of both bivalve species show characteristic trends: high values are related to (i) high submersion time and (ii) low population densities. Beyond this, the highest annual growth rates were observed during the first year, in general. Special emphasis was given to the growth trend of the epibenthicC. edule specimens from the bivalve clusters. Here, the shell-length values were only slightly lower, compared to those from adjacent endobenthic populations of the same spatfall. In general, the study shows that enforced epibenthic life-mode inC. edule does not, as a consequence, result in both mass-mortality or unfavorable growth conditions. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
