| Abstract | In this study, the effects of helium or a helium/oxygen mixture atmospheric pressure plasma treatment on the adsorption of chitosan onto the cotton fabric were investigated. Fabrics were treated with plasma prior to a chitosan finishing process, whereby fabrics were surface coated using a pad/dry/cure method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface energy analyser and contact angle measurements were used to investigate the changes on the cotton surface. Furthermore, antimicrobial activity of the cotton fabric was evaluated. The results showed that plasma pre-treatment enhanced the chitosan adsorption to the cotton surface through physical bonding and there was weak evidence of chemical bonding interactions. A combination of plasma and chitosan treatment did not show any significant differences on the antimicrobial properties compared to chitosan only treated fabric. Plasma treatment changed the fibres physically and enhanced the surface energy and thickness of chitosan distributed on the fibres. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
