Recreational behaviour and peoples wishes concerning forests have been the subject of studies by Forest Management and the Forestry Sciences for a long time. By contrast, sociology and recreational research deal in a much more general manner with the life circumstances and priorities of mankind. The consideration of work from the latter fields under the aspect of recreation in forests may permit a closer causal link to the broader context of recreational availability and life style. The folk song ”Das Wandern ist des Müllers Lust”, composed by Wilhelm Müller in the early 19th century, probably envisioned a millers journeyman on his travels. Since then social changes have had a definite influence not only on travelling journeymen but also on hiking as a recreational pastime of a wide range of people. The significance of both work and recreation has undergone vast changes in the course of the past 50 years, leading to a shift in priorities and to a great variety of alternative activities. In parallel with this development society has undergone a structural change. In the social sciences the attempt at defining modern structures has increasingly caused the different life styles to be eliminated as differentiating criteria. Life styles do not only have an effect on individual lives and recreational activities, but also on peoples inclination to visit forests.To-day, a great many people still like to hike. The more affluent among the senior age groups, however, express disappointment at the lack of exclusivity of this pastime, while a certain passivity appears to keep the less well-to-do from actively hiking.By contrast, cycling has become the great favourite among the young. In this day and age there is no longer just ”the bike” but the BMX, the All Terrain Bike, the Mountainbike, the touring bike and other offspring of the oldfashioned two-wheeler which permit conclusions to be drawn regarding ist owner. Tendencies towards greater dynamics and individuality within society are therefore not bypassing recreation in the forests either.

About National Digital Library of India (NDLI)
NDLI logo

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
