| Abstract | Within German social philosophy a debate has arisen about whether human societies should be best understood through the category of productive labor or through the notion of social communication. Interestingly enough this debate partly had to do with the best way to understand Hegel’s philosophical heritage. In the background of the conflicting interpretations given by Lukacs and Habermas on this text, our proposal in this paper is to reconsider the two paradigms of production and communication from the perspective of the Phenomenology of spirit . It will appear then that Hegel, far from opposing or even confounding them, actually tried to think in a dialectical way the equally important dimensions of work and recognition. |
