Abstract	Potential ant predation of Hypsipyla grandella in Costa rican coffee plantations.. In. some. Mesoamerican.coffee.plantations.valuable.timber.trees,.such.as.mahogany.(Swietenia spp.).and.cedar.(Cedrela spp.). are. often. severely. attacked. by. the. shootborer. Hypsipyla grandella. (Lepidoptera:. Pyralidae).. One. possibility.for.the.biological.control.of. this.pest.could.be.certain.predatory.ant.species.that.are.common.on. coffee.bushes..We.therefore.inventoried.the.ant.species.present.on.coffee.and.Spanish.cedar.(Cedrela odorata). in.Turrialba,.Costa.Rica..Six.species.were.captured,.of.which.five.were.present.on.both.coffee.and.cedar..The. dominant. species. were. Solenopsis geminata. and.Pheidole radoszkowskii,. which. together. represented. 88%. of.all. individuals,.and.were.more.abundant.on.coffee.than.on.cedar..The.species.diversity.values.(ShannonWiener. index).were.very.close. for.both.components,.while. the. similarity.of. species.between. them.(Jaccard. index).was.0.83..In.addition,.choice.tests.in.the.laboratory.and.greenhouse.showed.the.predatory.potential.of. S. geminata,.P. radoszkowskii.and.Crematogaster spp..on.various.stages.of.H. grandella..In.the.laboratory,.all. three.ants.preyed.on.at.least.one.stage.of.H. grandella,.at.times.attaining.100%.predation..Nonetheless,.this.did. not.occur.in.the.greenhouse,.where.only.S. geminata.preyed.on.eggs.of.H. grandella.
