| Abstract | Potential of ant predation on the coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) in Costa Rica. In Mesoamerica and the Caribbean, shading trees within coffee agroforestry systems (Coffea arabica) are a fairly common occurrence. It has been shown that these systems can contain high levels of insect biodiversity, including ants that could act as predators of key pests of coffee, such as the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). Therefore, in Heredia, Costa Rica, through laboratory and field tests, the predation potential of selected ant species (Solenopsis geminata, Pheidole radoszkowskii and Crematogaster torosa) on several coffee berry borer developmental stages was determined. Under laboratory conditions, all ant species caused predation to at least one stage of H. hampei, sometimes up to levels of 100%. However, this did not occur in the field, perhaps because ants were not attracted to borer-infested coffee beans, due to their generalist food habits. |
