The F.A.O (Food ant Agriculture Organization) as just publi shed a statistical document of the greatest emportance which traces, over a period of 28 (twenty-eight) years ( 1961-1989), the evolution of each s tates fishing ahd fish farming production, as well as tahat of FOOD A V AILABILITY, that is to say the quantities of auqatic animal proteins made available to the population . Given this data, the author tries to analyse and explain the huge dispainties in sonsumption between developed and under-deviloped countries. He shows, for example that the spectacular grouth n catches and farming production orf the last few decades has not been translated no a noticiable improvemant in Third World countries' levels of food consumption. This tends to confirm the fast that fisching production benefits less, even today, those who are hungry for protain, than those who a!ready have a high standard of living.
