| Abstract | This paper comprises an investigation on linguistic variation that aimed to identify meaning variations of the slangs ‘bombar’, ‘gastar’ e ‘role’ according to the acceptance and polarity evaluation by two varieties of Brazilian Portuguese speakers: young (15 to 25 years old) speakers from Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and Sao Paulo (SP). The raised hypothesis was that the slangs ‘bombar’, ‘gastar’ and ‘role’ (as in ‘o trabalho bombou’, ‘gastei na prova’ and ‘ir no shopping e role’) are used and accepted in both varieties, but have different meanings. In order to validate it, it was elaborated an acceptance and polarity evaluation test through a questionnaire answered by speakers of both varieties. The proposed data analysis characterized a basic, descriptive, synchronous and quantitative research, according to the Labovian model. The results obtained show that ‘bombar’ is accepted in both varieties with polarity variation (partial in RS and mostly negative in SP); ‘gastar’, on the other hand, is accept just by RS speakers; the polarity is positive at both, however, the SP speakers’ appraisal is more heterogeneous. Finally, ‘role’ is widely accepted at both, however, the polarity varies for the SP speakers. This way, it is concluded that the research achieved its objective by identifying such meaning variations of these slangs among the varieties studied. |
