EnglishIntroduction: The teaching of pathology is essential in undergraduate medical training. It is increasingly difficult to maintain the traditionalmethod of teaching gross pathology due to the difficulty in obtaining macroscopic samples, its high cost, legal difficulties, and the high number of students in courses of Pathology and teacher shortages. Objectives: To compare the effectiveness and user satisfaction between virtual and traditional classroom teaching of gross pathology in medical students. Material and Method: The study was conducted with 120 students from third to sixth year of Medicine at the Universidad San Sebastian in Concepcion. For the general analysis of learning outcomes, reliability was calculated with Cronbach's alpha plus the mean, standard deviation, minimum and maximum for subgroups. To compare performance between face-to face and virtual macroscopy groups, Student t test was used. A pattern of responses and a Likert type survey was applied to assess learning outcomes and student´s satisfaction respectively. Results: On gross pathology, the performance achieved by the students who worked with virtual samples (M = 24.02, SD = 0.43) was higher than those of students who worked with real samples (M = 21.79, SD = 0.59), t (112) = - 2.83, p Conclusions: This study shows that virtual teaching of gross pathology is more effective than traditional teaching and students find more satisfactory studying with virtual items than with real preparations. The results are similar to those obtained in similar studies in anatomy and histology. |
