| Abstract | The degradation of soil quality can be demonstrated through the evaluation changes of physical and hydraulic properties of the same soil with different managements. The search for an index of evaluation of soil physical quality to replace the old concept of available water becomes increasingly important, as several other characteristics and requirements of crops may limit their growth and development, aeration highlighting and the resistance to penetration of roots. This study aimed characterize of the least limiting water range of an Oxisol cultivated with sugarcane under different irrigation levels under subsurface drip. This study was conducted at the Instituto Federal Goiano – Campus Rio Verde Go. The treatments consisted of 3 levels of fluid replacement (0, 50 and 100% field capacity), irrigation was conducted based on tensiometers. The area has been chemically adjusted according to result of soil analysis. For soil measurements, samples were collected with deformed structure at depths of 0-10, 10-20 and 20-40 cm. It was considered as the upper limit, the water content retained in the matric potential of -0.006 MPa as the field capacity or in which the aeration porosity is 10%. As lower limits were considered the water content retained in the matric potential of -1.5 MPa, permanent wilting point, and / or the corresponding water content to the penetration resistance of 2.5 MPa. For water management in irrigated system must be taken into account not only the limits imposed by the field capacity and permanent wilting point, but also factors such as aeration porosity and resistance to soil penetration. |
