| Abstract | In Pernambuco the production of sugar cane is very concentrated in coastal areas. In these areas, due to the intrusion of sea water, the waters used for irrigation can present high levels of salts and cause serious soil and plant problems, as well as changes in their physiology. These changes are related to the tolerance of the crop to the salinity and the quality of irrigation water applied, since each plant responds differently to the same saline level in which it is submitted. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of irrigation water salinity on irrigated sugar cane physiology with five salinity levels (0.5, 2.0, 3.5, 5.0 and 6,5dS m) and four replicates with a completely randomized design in drainage lysimeters. The salinity levels were reached by addition of NaCl and CaCl2 to the local water supply. The sugar cane variety RB867515 was used. At 60 days after planting (DAP) the seedlings began to receive saline treatments with frequency of daily drip irrigation, corresponding to evapotranspiration of the crop, estimated by climatic method. At 140, 229 and 320 DAP readings of stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis were performed on the +3 leaf of the plants and at 137, 243 and 318 DAP, water leaf potential analysis. A linear reduction was observed as a function of the irrigation water salinity increase in all analyzed variables and epochs, and these reductions were more significant in the first evaluation (140 and 137 DAP), except for the photosynthesis that provided the greatest linear reduction in the last data collection (320 DAP). The increase in salinity of irrigation water negatively influenced gas exchange and water potential in sugarcane leaves. |
