| Abstract | RESÚMEN/RÉSUMÉ SCHMITT, Valdenise. This study aims at measuring the effect of infographics in the comprehension of scientific journalistic news. At first, a bibliographic research was carried on in order to make it possible to deal with the concepts, the origins and the application areas of infographics, especially the journalistic infographics in both the press and on-line media. Then, the researcher emphasized the importance of scientific communication and of the use of infographics in this journalistic area as a means to communicate scientific laws, processes and theories to people who are not familiar with these subject matters. Both text comprehension process and cognitive theories were used to investigate how people process and retrieve information. Next, it was established which methodology was to be applied to investigate whether infographics improve the understanding of scientific and technological journalistic news, considering that images help readers to construct functional mental patterns. The experiment investigated the journalistic news information recall of a scientific paper regarding drinking water shortage and the desalinization process, which was presented in two distinct versions – ‘only text’ and ‘text and infographics’ – in the on-line medium. The results of the experiment indicate that university students that read the ‘text and infographics’ version showed an information recall average that was a little higher than that of the group that were exposed to the reading of the ‘only text’ version. The former group also considered the content more clear and less confusing than the latter group, who received the ‘only text’ version did. |
