| Abstract | In the present study, we have examined the localization of CGRP in the central and peripheral nervous system, with special reference to coexistence with acetyl choline (Ach) in the rat. Choline acetyl transferase(CAT), a synthesizing enzyme of Ach, was used as a marker for the Ach neuron system. The coexistence of CGRP and Ach was examined on consecutive sections. In the brain and spinal cord, Ach neurons located in the somatomotor(nIII,nIV,nVI,nXII,anterior horn) and branchiomotor(nV, nVII,n.ambiguus) showed CGRP positive simultaneously; while Ach neurons in other areas lacked CGRP. In the striated muscles, CGRP fibers showed neuromuscler junction like profiles. Subsequent electromicroscopic analysis demonstrated intense precipitations of immunoreaction within the terminals forming the neuro muscler junction, particularly those associated with the outer surface of the small empty synaptic vesicles(40-50 nm in diameter). These findings indicate an important role of CGRP on striated muscle movement. |
