| Abstract | Effect of the Brachiaria sp. with Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) and Matarraton (Gliricidia sepium) mixture on milk production An experiment in El Vigia, Merida state, Venezuela, at an altitude of 65 m. The design used was completely randomized. The treatments were grasses pastures with and without shrub legumes (Leucaena and Matarraton), with three levels of concentrates (1, 2 and 3 kg/cow/day). The stocking rate was 3.0 AU/ha for mixed pastures and 1.25 AU/ha for the traditional system using grasses. A rotational grazing system was used. Milk production was not affected by the treatments and reached 6.82, 7.20 and 7.03 L/cow with leucaena, matarraton and without legumes, respectively. Weight gain were greater when the animals consumed shrub legumes. The use of legumes was greater than that of grasses. Protein content was 23.4 % for leucaena, 18.8 % for matarraton and 7.8 % for mixed grasses, while it was 6.9 % for the average of the principal forages on the ranch. Yield for the same area was almost three times greater than with the traditional system using grasses. |
