| Abstract | Objective: To understand the characteristics age, education, diversity, functional area, work experience and membership of certain groups the top management teams influence the innovative capacity of firms. Methodology: In this study it was used a Systematic Combining methodology, which according to Dubois and Gadde (2002: 554.) "Is a process where theoretical frameworks, empirical studies and case study analysis are developed simultaneously?" The literature review was strongly influenced by the Upper Echelons of Hambrick and Mason model (1984), which from the characteristics that has, led to a case study where to enable more reliable results, companies were chosen from the same industry but from two different municipalities to be able to evaluate similar companies in different contexts. Results: it was realized that factors such as youth are not as positive aspect for the top management teams of the companies, as it would expectable. However, the result with biggest impact was the perception of the difference between companies in each municipality, and also realized that the context in which each company operates is a very important factor that influences the characteristics of members of top management teams and hence innovation in enterprises. Limitations: it would have been interesting to have deepened the study and interviewed more companies, however this is where the main limitations arise, consequence of the lack of time to conduct interviews and also the lack of availability of people contacted. Originality / value: the added value of this study was the fact that it was possible to combine the characteristics of members of the top management teams to innovation in business and also been possible to compare the teams characteristics between companies from both studied cities. |
