| Abstract | The “precarizacao” of employment and labor relations has been pointed out in social sciences and economic literature as one of the main problems related to the transformation of the capitalist system, which occurred since the last quarter of the XX century, as a result of the crisis of the capitalist system. In Brazil these changes, linked to the restructuring of the production process and the labor reorganization, occurred more intensely from the early nineties onwards, in a context marked with the opening of the economy to the international trade, with the increase of the competition between firms and with the rise of the neo-liberal ideology. Bearing in mind this scenario the main objective of this study is to investigate the impact of these processes on the Brazilian society and, in particular on its labor force. The focus of the analysis is placed on the disorganization of labor relations and, in particular, on the spread of precarious forms of work, which broke away from the previous patterns of inclusive labor relations, based on fordism — protected and legally founded wage relationships in the labor market. Although this concept is related to the informal sector approach, we discuss the similarities and the differences between the notion of “precarizacao” and that of the informal sector. Furthermore, considering we are facing new phenomena, we emphasize the need of more empirical research and further theoretical discussion in order to develop conceptual vocabulary to improve its understanding. In order to apprehend different levels of precariousness at work a specific methodology was developed including three main analytical strategies: 1) the classification of the workers into occupational categories; 2) the definition of variables and indicators to characterize the forms of insertion of the labor force in the labor market, in order |
