| Abstract | This study aimed to determine the gravimetric composition of municipal solid waste (MSW) in municipal garbage dump in Maria da Fé, Minas Geraisaiming to gather information on the predominant waste generated in the city so that subsequent projects can be realized. The waste characterization was performed using the quartering method, which consists in separating waste by type and subsequent weighing to check their percentage considering the total weight. Results of the quartering observed predominance of putrescible organic matter, representing 55.6% of total waste sampled, which is very close result of the national average; followed by 12.7% of other types of waste; 12.2% of plastic; 11.1% of paper / cardboard; 5.60% 2.80% metal and glass. The data obtained from the gravimetric composition of the County may be used to perform further effective projects to waste collection, beside rise awareness in the population through environmental education programs that show the importance of the collection and proper disposal of waste. |
