| Abstract | The linear stability of a plane Poiseuille flow of a viscoelastic fluids in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is investigated numerically. The main purpose of this work is to check the combined effects of the magnetic field and of the relaxation and retardation times of the Oldroyd-B fluid on the stability picture of this flow. The equations governing the stability analysis is solved by a spectral method of Chebyshev collocation. Based on the results obtained in this work, the relaxation time is predicted to have a destabilizing effect on plane Poiseuille flow. However, the retardation time has a stability effect on this flow. The magnetic field has a stabilizing and a destabilizing effect on this flow. The investigation of the eigenspectrum for this flow exhibits the existence of two continuum spectrums of stable eigenmodes.
