| Abstract | his study aims to analyze the socioeconomic, public health and individual factors that influence tuberculosis mortality in Brazilian municipalities. The result of the estimation by Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) shows that the variables: proportion of those vulnerable to poverty, illiteracy rate, percentage of the population aged 25 or over with complete primary education, percentage of families with no full elementary school , Gini index income, unemployment rate, household density, percentage of population with access to piped water, percentage of doses of BCG vaccine, percentage of cases of co infection between tuberculosis and HIV, percentage of AIDS cases, percentage of male population , percentage of the population aged between 30 and 59 years old and the elderly have a positive influence on the mortality rate due to tuberculosis. On the other hand, the variables: average household income per capita, proportion of people with low income, Human Development index, percentage of people enrolled in primary care and percentage of the population aged 5 to 14 years negatively influence the mortality rate of the disease. Thus, poverty, education, HIV and AIDS cases showed a strong link with tuberculosis mortality, and Primary Care showed to be an important factor for its control. As of 2006, the mortality rate for tuberculosis has shown a tendency to grow, even with several plans and strategies being launched to control the disease that insists on maintaining itself as a serious public health problem. |
