| Abstract | The present study analyzes the situation of the beef cattle production sector in the province of Pastaza, the Ecuadorian Amazonia. The contribution of this province to the Amazonian scene is reduced (5.2 % of the total cattle livestock); however, in the last ten years this area has had an increase of 69.2 % in the grazed area, as well as an important forest area reduction. The descriptive results from the 86 surveys, in whose main functioning dynamics we delve into, identifying the strengths and weaknesses that the current situation of farms has, are shown. The surveyed farms are characterized by a remarkable family nature, with significant deficiencies in animal feeding due to the grazing system or pastures involved, negative economic results and low generational shift due to the extreme conditions where livestock is handled. This activity takes place in a fragile ecosystem with particular pedoclimatological conditions that affect their economic and productive performance. In this context, it is necessary to implement a management system that ensures the development of such livestock to improve its economic and productive efficiency and which, at the same time, reduces the environmental impact generated on the ecosystem. |
