| Abstract | We present simulations of a mathematical model of the transmission dynamics of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL). The model describes the dynamics of infection in humans, donkeys, dogs and vectors using a set of differential equations. The simulations are performed with the discretized model (difference equations) and studies the dynamics resulting from the assumption of different reservoir (source and sink of parasites) and incidental hosts (only sinks of parasites) among the considered vertebrate species. Based on the development time of the dynamics we can state that observations by Aguilar et al. (1984) on ACL can be explained by considering either donkeys and/or dogs as Leishmania parasites reservoirs and humans as incidental hosts. We discuss the elements that support the assumption that donkeys were primary reservoirs in Las Rosas (Estado Cojedes, Venezuela). |
