| Abstract | Product design; additive manufacturing (3D printing); design practice; design education The evolution of additive technology from a rapid prototyping system towards an effective production process promises to release product design from the constraints imposed by conventional manufacturing processes. This shift of constructive paradigm led to the awareness of the potential of additive processes and challenges designers to explore infinite possibilities through a modern aesthetic and functional alternative. Due to the current relevance of additive manufacturing technologies and the possibilities they offer, this research aims to explore the unique potentialities of additive manufacturing in the educational context of product design. The present research has as an objective contributing towards the domain of knowledge in the design for additive manufacturing, in its praxiological, epistemological and phenomenological aspects, highlighting the potential changes in the methodological approach, in the cognitive process and in the functional and aesthetic aspects of the products designed for additive manufacturing. From an exploratory and broad-spectrum approach focused on higher education in design, the study was conducted through formal and documented observation of a specific design project to additive manufacturing, which constitutes the reported and analysed case study. The analysis of the results presents a set of contributions, considerations and possible approaches related to teaching design for additive manufacturing, take into account in the future. |
