| Abstract | METHODS AND EFFIClENCY OF THE FIGHT AGAINST HYDRO-EROSION IN BURKINA FASO In the elimatic context of drought, contro//ing water and preserving the soils represent a primary objective for Burkina Faso. The methods to fight erosion may today be inspired by a whole range of traditional technics stem ming for the farmer's spontaneous initiatives. They are either mechanical processes (rows of stones, fascine work, plantations of grass or bushes) or biological or cultural practices (companion crops, mulching, ridging). Since the ear/y 70s, two public bodies have launched programmes of preservation resorting to the technic of buffer strip cropping (A. V. V. : Amenagement des Vallees des Voltas) or terraces of diversion (F.E.E.R. : Fonds de l'Eau et de l'Equipement Rural). In the case of F.E.E.R., the farmer's participation is effective during the phase of elabora tion. On the other hand, the maintenance of terraces (47 000 hectares treated between 1977 and 1985) remains very uncertain on account of varied and complex constraints. Technically speaking, useful lessons, at least for the northern regions, may be drawn from the experimentations conducted by some non-governmental organizations. However, all protective strategies probably depend more on eventual land reforms and economic measures that would stop emigration. |
