| Abstract | Health, nutrition and population (HNP) indicators in Sub-Saharan Africa are relatively poor compared to the rest of the world. They also appear to be quite diverse across Sub-Saharan African countries, varying strongly depending on the incidence of poverty and whether the place of residence is urban or rural (although discussions on the precise definitions of urban or rural residence remain open). The main objectives of the study are: (a) to analyze the HNP gap between urban and rural areas, its major causes and its implications for efforts to improve these indicators and reduce poverty; (b) to examine, from the viewpoint of HNP indicators, key documents on the poverty reduction strategy in Burkina Faso, including the millennium development goals (MDGs), and in particular goals 3, 4, and 5 (concerning gender equality, child mortality and maternal health, see Annex 1); and, finally, (c) to describe possible approaches to reduce this gap, including suggestions for strategies and programs. This paper includes the following headings: the eradication of poverty, and the health system; variations between urban and rural HNP indicators; the fight against poverty and mitigating the gap between urban and rural HNP indicators; and conclusions. |
