| Abstract | This report on poverty and health in Burkina Faso, is a contribution to the process of developing the health component of the strategic framework for poverty reduction, and for incorporating poverty reduction into both national health policy, and the national health development plan. The report is based on an analysis showing that the health situation of the poor is the result of a complex interaction between health, and poverty: not only does poverty lead to poor health status, but poor health also contributes to monetary poverty. In order to promote a better understanding of these relationships, and a better linkage of policies, and health interventions in the context of the poverty reduction strategy, this report is therefore based on analyses of the health situation; demographic and health surveys; surveys of household living conditions; and strategic sector work, carried out in order to initiate a process of information-gathering on poverty, and health in the country. The country's predominantly Sudano-Sahelian climate plays out in a geographic poverty/health connection-setting, conducive to malaria, respiratory infections, and other communicable diseases, such as measles and meningitis. The report analyzes trends in the country's health status, and weaknesses in the health care system, stipulating measures to redirect health care services towards vulnerable communities, through strategies that: enhance health care treatments, and nutritional issues; ensure access to rural populations, by strengthening communities; improve human resources; pursue micro-planning systems for monitoring improvement of health indicators; and, ensure access to prevention, treatment, and care of HIV/AIDS epidemic. |
